That being said, Wilson's racism wasn't all that unusual among US presidents. He was the first Southern president since 1869 and, as David Blight's wonderful Race and Reunion points out, his administration played a key role in solidifying white supremacy - partly by participating in a Southern-driven re-remembering of the Civil War. The trick was that he hadn't considered that advocacy in an anti-colonial context - he was really only referring to Western nations - and so he fell out of favor with anti-colonial activists fairly quickly, even as those activists kept pushing for self-determining nation-states in their homelands.ĭomestically, yes: Wilson was racist. Wilson was promoting the self-determining nation-state as the only form of legitimate governance globally.
